Specifc brace care
Removable braces
If you have a removable brace, you can obviously
remove it and clean your teeth in the normal way before putting
it back in. Remember to clean your brace too, by brushing
gently with a toothbrush or holding under running water.
Fixed braces
Your fixed brace is cemented to your teeth and is
made up of several small and delicate parts. It’s very
important you take care of it, as repeated breakages will
prolong your treatment and you’ll have to wear your
brace for longer. Here’s some do’s and don’ts.
| • |
Avoid chewing your nails, biting your pen
or pencil etc |
| • |
Avoid sticky or chewy sweets, toffee or chewing gum
as these could get stuck to your brace and bend or break
your wire/s |
| • |
Cut hard, crunchy foods such as apples or carrots into
small pieces, rather than biting into them |
Functional appliances
We will advise you how to care for your functional
brace, depending on which type you have, fixed or removable.
Retainers
Retainers are removable so you’ll be able to
take it out to clean it, and your teeth of course. We will
advise you how to care for your retainer but because you don’t
need to wear it all the time we’d recommend you buy
a retainer box (available from reception) to keep it clean
and hygienic.
Recommended products
When you have your brace fitted you’ll be able
to buy an Orthodontic Care Kit from reception, containing
everything you need to look after your new brace. We’ll
also talk you through the do’s and don’ts and
answer any questions you may have.
You’re also welcome to call or email us at any time
if you have any queries or concerns.
