Oral
Hygiene
Wearing a brace can increase your risk
from tooth decay or permanent staining so it’s essential
that you take care of your teeth. We’d recommend cleaning
your teeth thoroughly after every meal using an interdental
toothbrush (available from reception). It’s also a good
idea to use disclosing tablets as they’ll show up any
plaque you’ve missed during brushing. It may also help
to use a mouthwash to remove any traces of food that may have
got left behind. Try to cut down on sugary drinks, sweets
and chocolate and drink fruit juices through a straw to protect
your teeth.
Is it best to use a manual or
electric toothbrush?
Either is fine as long as you remember to clean around
your fixed brace brackets carefully. Ideally, we’d recommend
you use an interdental toothbrush (available from reception)
because they’re specially designed to help you clean
under your fixed brace wire/s.
If you have a removable brace, you can obviously remove it
and clean your teeth in the normal way before putting it back
in. Remember to clean your brace too, by brushing gently with
a toothbrush or holding under running water.
Recommended oral hygiene aids
We’d recommend you use disclosing tablets to
make sure you’ve removed all traces of plaque from your
teeth, especially if you have a fixed brace.
Using a good quality mouthwash can help to keep your mouth
clean too, by rinsing away any traces of food that may have
got stuck in your fixed brace wire/s. It’ll also helps
to keep your breath fresh.
